In Tune With Vulnerability
This piece was created for my senior thesis project, where I chose to study women’s vulnerability as expressed in music throughout the last century. During difficult times in my life, I have always resorted to listening to music. It made me feel less alone, hearing other women go through the same things that I was going through and having an outlet to let those feelings go.
I chose a female artist from each decade starting in the 1920s and ending in the 2020s that inspired me. I analyzed the artists' different personalities, performances, and lives, searching for a common thread in their music. This research helped me to learn exactly who each artist was, not just based on their music but based on their life experiences and what inspired them to write such vulnerable lyrics.
My goal with this project is for people to understand that music is not just a couple of notes blended together to make a beat. It's not just words that are spoken to a tune. Music is a form of expression, vulnerability, and understanding.
